Increase the Life of Your Transmission

If you are a smart person, and we sure do hope you are, you must prevent transmissions problems from even arising in the first place. This not only helps you get the most mileage out of your transmission but also helps save money in the long run.

What is better?

Having a transmission that just lasts 60,000 miles as it develops issues, or having a transmission that lasts 120,000 miles just because you took proper care of it?

Obviously, the latter as transmission repair or replacement is not cheap, and proper transmission maintenance is not difficult and does not cost much. Following are some easy tips you can use to increase the life of your transmission.

Check the Transmission Fluid on a Regular Basis

Transmission fluid is one of the most important components of the car. Routine maintenance of your transmission fluid can go a long way when it comes to prolonging the life of your transmission. Some of the most common transmission issues arise due to dirty fluid; therefore, this is not something that should be taken lightly. Heat is the transmission’s worst enemy. You must do everything you can to prevent it from overheating. You must check the transmission fluid on a regular basis, at least once every month, to assess the levels and conditions. You can learn a lot just by taking a look at your fluid; thus, checking it regularly is going to help you out.

Consider Synthetic Transmission Fluid

Synthetic fluids have become all the more popular nowadays as they work so much better than the ordinary fluids typically used in transmission. Synthetic fluids offer better performance when it comes to resisting heat, cold, oxidation, and shearing, all of which is going to shorten the life of the transmission under normal circumstances. There are several manufacturers that utilize synthetic fluids, and it would be smart of you to do the same. Even though they are on the pricier side, it is going to be worth it in the long run.

Maintain the Cooling System

Since heat is detrimental for your car’s transmission, the vehicle’s radiator helps cool it down. It is important to maintain your car’s cooling system also. It is advised to do so after every two years. Our Car Transmission Repair and maintenance services comprise of replacing the antifreeze, taking a look at the coolant levels, checking for leaks, inspecting hoses and belts, checking the thermostat, plus a radiator cap pressure test.

Add an External Filter to the Cooler Lines

There is already a filter in the transmission itself that traps all the dirt as well as dust particles from coming in contact with the transmission fluid; however, sometimes this is not enough. Adding an extra filter to your car’s cooler line can help trap contaminants, which can then help in keeping the fluid clean and working smoothly!
